Firefox meeting Monday June 16th, will go over some of changes in Firefox 3,
AwesomeBar (location bar autocomplete list) and bookmarking changes (places),
and changes to secure sites interface at the location bar. Firefox has made
additional big changes in faster speed -- which you will see, and what you
won't see but can take them at their word better memory usage, and security.

Firefox set a World Record
in number of downloads in 24 hours 8,002,530 people downloaded Firefox on Tuesday June 17, 2008. Downloading of 3.0 is currently over 28 million copies downloaded.

A duplicate profile can be set up to help determine what may be wrong in
your main profile, so that you can essentially leave your main profile intact.
If you want to test with Beta Firefox versions then you would want to
use a separate profile.
Some Extensions you might want to include in a profile are
Launchy, Load Profile Folder, Nightly Tester Tools, and Stylish.

This meeting may also touch on some aspects of backing up and restoring Firefox user profiles from your backup device using XCOPY with /D for date checking, and some problems you may encounter when there is more data on the backup than there was on the HD because because the backup copies only files that are not already on the backup or that are newer than on the backup, and does not delete files from the backup. Result is you have a lot more bookmark backups than 5, and you end up with additional extensions that you had gotten rid of. Having InfoLister listings for comparisons is helpful.
Firefox 3.0.11 is the current version, Firefox 2 is no longer supported.
You can update from an earlier version 3 to 3.0.11 via Help, check for updates.

- What’s New in Firefox 3.5?, video by Mike Beltzner
There were a couple of things in there that are not new in Fx3 involving
deleting History items, see Deleting history items.
- If you downloaded Firefox 3.5, you should update to 3.5.1 to bring Firefox startup down to about 15 seconds through
the Help menu then Update. Firefox 3.5 when first made public was very slow on Windows systems.

- Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper, Element Hiding Helper is a companion extension for Adblock Plus meant to make creating element hiding rules easier.
- Multiple Tab Handler, Provides feature to close multiple tabs. Also install Tab Clicking Options to be able to close a tab with double-click.
- There are a number of spellcheckers that work in editors, and in web forms, but the
"SpellCheck" extension
uses Firefox's spelling checker to check the spelling of web pages, invoked from the Edit Menu
(good start, but can't add extension marked words to dictionary).
- Text Area Resizer & Mover, Allows to easily resize or even move textareas. (see resize)
- GoogleEnhancer, Light-weight Google enhancement. Use with Customize Google,
use icons via CG, use pos numbering via GE, so can work when signed into Google.

Template for creating bookmarklet for multiple stores:

Bookmarklets: Multiple Search as described on Keyword Search, look for javascript_h4 or open multiple pages.
These bookmarklets will search multiple retailers on a search
argument, each store opening into its own page so you can refine your search arguments
from the generic one you used when invoking the bookmarklet. For best search urls, right-click in the store's search field, and choose "Add a keyword for this search" then copy the properties into notepad, substituting %S for %s in your pattern. (This will work much better than trying to modify a completed search url). Drag the completed bookmarklet to a folder in your bookmarks toolbar, and provide a Keyword shortcut (search name) in the bookmarks properties. Any keyword you want, perhaps "shopping:online" and
"shopping:local" might be better names. These are just examples.
To use: type the keyword you assigned, and your search argument.

Firefox gets its robustness not from what is installed when you install Firefox from mozilla.com but from the extensions that you add in later.
I like to work with a lot of tabs open in the window, so I have changed a number of tab related options and have added a number of
tab related extensions, and styles.
One annoyance that many users faced is that Firefox tabs were changed in Firefox 3.6 to be more like those in Opera by opening to
the right of the parent tab instead of at the end of the tabs bar. To disable this feature
enter about:config into the location bar then filter on insertRelatedAfterCurrent, which will probably show nothing, so
right-click under preferences and choose New -> Boolean then for name enter (without any spaces)
browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent then for the value set to False. The current version of Firefox is 3.6.4.
You can change Firefox styling (chrome) with changes to userChrome.css, but an easier way is with the "Stylish" extension. A
style to add color below the tab's title is "Tab Color Underscoring active/read/unread (Fx3.6)"
(http://userstyles.org/styles/24728) that colors the bottom border of a tab with RED for active tab, BLUE for a normal tab, GREEN
for a still unread tab, and MAGENTA for loading/reloading tab activity. In other words distinguishes tabs as active tab, viewed
tab, or unviewed tab.
One of my web pages, "Tabbed Browsing in Firefox" (http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/tabs.htm), has additional suggestions
for tab usage and some help for debugging link target usages.
One of the extensions I've recently started using is "Multiple Tab Handler" which you can find at addons (addons.mozilla.com),
and it allows you to make selections among tabs, and to close selected tabs, close tabs to the left or right of the active tab,
and also adds a "close all tabs" to the tab context menu. You will also find this extension useful to add tab selections of
titles and urlnames in formatting of your choice to the clipboard for use in HTML files, wikis, blogs, and email. For single tab
use where you an include a selection of webpage text the "Copy All Urls" extension is any of my favorites.
One of the most frequent problems users have with Firefox is installing extensions that are not compatible with each other or even
with Firefox, so a good place to start is with "Problematic extensions" (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions), where
you will find suggestions for making changes to modify options, or to disable a conflicting extension, so that you can use what is
most important to you.

For those that are not using Firefox already, you can get Firefox at mozilla.com, if you are already using a different browser then do not make Firefox your default browser at this time. Your email and other applications will open webpages with your default browser.
For Firefox users that want to see the future Firefox in progress, install Minefield which is currently Firefox 4.0b7pre, which will install by default in a separate directory than your normal Firefox.

- Other browsers can be discussed and worked with. I use Firefox on laptop, but can use
IE, Google Chrome, Oper, and Safari on the laptop. On my Android tablet I use Dolphin but the default is the tablet default browser. All Android tablets are tied into the Google Android operating system so are limited compared to desktop versions. The only thing better about the tablet versions are voice interface and smaller operational sizes. My tablet also has Firefox mobile, and Opera.
- I also make use of Evernote for keeping notes and it is synced between laptop and tablet, and some notebooks are shared with other users.

Will be mainly about bookmarks and bookmarklets on the Android browsers. Bookmarklets need to be modified for Dolphin and the modified bookmarks work on the other Android browsers. Latest modifications were to provide parameters from a prompt lacking Firefox %s and %S substitutions and keyword shortcuts. (mouse over links for more information)
Most of this will be oriented to the Dolphin browser on Android.
Opera dropped bookmarks on their main Android browser, hopefully temporarily until after IOS version using SDK gets to Android, in the meantime install and use Opera Classic, which will bring in bookmarks from default Browser as read only.
The Boat browser is the only one I have that really sorts bookmarks (within a folder), Dolphin allows you to rearrange bookmarks within a bookmarks folder. The default browser does not allow you rearrange bookmarks and does not support bookmark folders.
If anyone is using Google Chrome on Android (ICS and JellyBean) would like to hear more, but I can't install it on Gingerbread (2.3.4).

You do not need to know how to program in order to install and use bookmarklets. You can simply install them from many different sites.
You don’t need to know how to program to install and use bookmarklets.
Bookmarklets can often be used instead of add-ons or extensions, with a lot
less overhead, and no more overhead when not in use than a bookmark.

I redid the page for my main bookmarklets (after four years), contains keyword shortcuts
for the bookmarklets. Firefox is the only browser that fully supports them for regular bookmarks,
substitution bookmarks, and JavaScript bookmarklets.

I will be able to demonstrate use of the Amazon Firestick using the club projector instead of a TV. I had tried at home before and failed, but the problem was using a cellphone power adapter instead of the Amazon power adapter.
I am using the Firestick to watch TV shows and movies with just an internet connection, no cable subscription. Generally, I can watch the 5 episodes of a current show before the latest episode in the current season. One trick you have to learn with Amazon is to turn on parental controls so that Amazon will not bill you for anything unexpected like Amazon Prime for movies, music, and other things like Netflix and premium channels that they install on your Firestick.
The Firestick can take Alexa commands and display as well as voice replies (but not make phone calls). Unfortunately the remote and software do not allow you to copy and paste.

Free TV and Movies ★, I purchased a Firestick, this is how I set it up to avoid charges for Prime and payments to watch movies on my TV which is not connected to cable. TV is connected to internet with an Amazon Firestick ($39.99). I updated how to avoid Prime, and what apps I installed, including a Firestick app so I could use a tablet for keyboard entry.

Freedompop cellphone -- transfer cellphone or purchase a FP phone 2017-11-30 FP, removed private information so could make it public , included settings on cellphones so I could use them on FP for incoming and outgoing cell and wi-fi calls. Each of my cellphones get 200 voice minutes, 500 message texts, and no voice mail. But it is my GV number that I give out so I do get VM through Google hangouts.

The OBi200 is $55 from Amazon (the OBi202 has two phone ports), I have the OBi200 it allows me to use my free Google Voice number for my home phone. My GV number itself can forward calls to my cellphone, tablet, and laptops (though I have just one laptop at the moment), so everything gets a chance to answer calls to my GV number. Downside is that GV doesn't know if I answer on my home phone, and if I answer on my home phone the cellphone don't know that I answered. But it's just me so no problem for me, and very limited phone usage.

On Android, I use a much smaller set where I can use gestures to invoke them. Dolphin is the only
decent browser (on Android) to support them. Bookmarklets for use on Android other than Firefox
have to be written a little differently.
◄rehide the Past Meetings
Vivaldi and Brave are based on Chrome and most browsers can use Chrome extensions. Basically, I've found enough to work with even though they may not be as robust as Firefox extensions used to be.
Please bring your laptops, we have WiFi, tables, and electrical outlets available. SIG meetings are breakout groups and are more hands-on than just presentations. Having your laptop allows you to install extensions, bookmarklets, use online tools, solve problems, and demonstrate or test things while on site.
We meet on the second floor of the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad and parking is free in the two large lots nearby. Parking next to the building is reserved for Rescue Squad members.
Meetings are open to the public and are free. We rely on membership dues as part of ACGNJ (acgnj.org) to pay for facilities we use and other expenses.
Guests are always welcome, we have Wi-Fi connection and tables for laptops, tablets, or whatever you want to carry in.
Priorities are always for those that have questions. My main interests are browser usage. Dolphin on Android tablets, and Firefox on desktops. If you have a specific question you can always email me.
