For Excel to use a different font you must use the font drop down box. In word if you copy a character you copy both the character and the font.

If you see the same character in all fonts then you have overriden the web page fonts with -- Tools, Internet Options, General, Accessibility (button), Ignore font styles specified on web pages. (default font is specified from the Fonts button. (Am looking for some bookmarklets to switch between)
If you are using Mozilla or Firefox as you browser you won't see these characters unless you install the Windows fonts you already have when you are using Excel. http://wwww.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm#wingdings
If you have Internet Explorer or a modified Firefox browser you should be able to see:
