Cannot open or delete a document (claims to be in use by another user when it isn't)

Article contributed by Doug Robbins

When an IPF or major computer crash occurs whilst using Word, Windows may stop you opening the document that was in use at the time of the crash because one or more locking files may still be active. To resolve this problem, close all applications and then using Windows Explorer, Search or Find Files and search for the following: -

*.tmp
~$*.do?

Delete all that you find. This will remove any locking files and you will now be able to open and edit your document.

Another tip: when just Word crashes, an instance of it may still be active. To get rid of this instance, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, in the list of tasks, find Microsoft Word, and click End Task.

After a system crash, it is advisable to schedule a full ScanDisk and follow up with a full Defrag.
