This article lists the problems that are fixed in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Service packs are cumulative. This means that the problems that are fixed in a service pack are also fixed in later service packs. For example, Windows XP SP2 contains all the fixes that are included in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1). You do not have to install an earlier service pack before you install Windows XP SP2.

By default, the Windows Firewall feature is enabled in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). Incoming requests against unopened ports are blocked by Windows Firewall. (These incoming requests are different from responses to requests that originate from the computer.) This default setting impacts how Group Policy Resultant Set of Policy (RSoP) is used across the network. When you install Windows XP SP2, you must enable certain Group Policy settings before you can remotely administer RSoP or remotely edit local Group Policy objects (GPOs).

When you try to modify or to view Group Policy objects (GPOs) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 (SP1), Microsoft Windows XP Professional, or Microsoft Windows 2000, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:

  • The following entry in the [strings] section is too long and has been truncated.

Some text may be displayed after this error message, and this text varies in different scenarios. Additionally, if you click OK in the error message window, a similar error message may be repeated. Each error message that is repeated has different text that is displayed after the error message.
